Top Ten Technology blogs by Alexa (may 2008)

This is a post we’ve been asked for for quite a while now.

In the plethora of blogs out there, most of which are about technology, it’s becoming more and more difficult to tell the good stuff apart from the crap.

What we are reporting below is a list of the most popular blogs according to the number of readers reported by Alexa, together with our reviews for the top 5, which we avidly read daily. We gathered data from the main 30 blogs and monitored them for some time. Here’s what we found out:

Top ten technology blogs by Tagmarketer

Before we start discussing this let me put down the criteria by which we selected the sites.

1) we are talking about blogs: sites like cnet.com (portal) or techmeme.com (aggregator) are not considered blogs, therefore they didn’t make it in the list

2) they have to be mainly about the internet, software and computers: sites like gizmodo.com were kept out of the arena

Here are our reviews

engadget.com
more oriented to hardware rather than software and internet companies, it has an appealing editorial style.
Downside: total absence of non-hardware articles.

techcrunch.com
has the best selection of writers (don’t miss Arrington’s posts about the music market!) and a great range of subjects. More focused on internet companies and software rather than hardware. It’s our pick for the excellent level of their writing.
Downside: their posts are so frequent that it’s hard to keep up with all of them, needs to select the main ones in some sub-category.

arstechnica.com
good array of subjects, switches from multimedia, to hardware and internet always keeping its quality at a decent level.
Downside: messy page and poor graphics.

radar.oreilly.com
Tim O’Reilly is one of the finest writers of the web 2.0 and his team reflects his attitude at predicting the future. Use it if timing is a critical factor in your business.
Downside: Tim’s articles are too few.

slashdot.com
Has a clean and appealing graphics.
Downside: most articles are about niche subjects.

  1. These are all nice blogs, but each of them gives out tens of posts a day and getting the feel of what’s really important is complicated. Is there any site that collects the best articles? I don’t want to use some automatic aggregator or rss feeds, I just need a selection of the finest ones, does anyone know about it?

  3. Danielle, Dosh Dosh did’t make it in the list because it ranked 12th on Alexa, those guys do a good job though.

  4. The need for an aggregator is a real one for me as well, too much noise otherwise.

  5. In response to Andrew and Fred: we’re monitoring some aggregators and will come out with a new post about them soon.
